American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Texas Medical Center
The Houston Business Journal’s Emily Wilkinson just published a news article titled, “Nonprofit secures land in Texas Medical Center, receives major gift for new facility.”
According to the HBJ article, the American Cancer Society has secured 2.05 acres of land in the Texas Medical Center to develop it’s largest Hope Lodge in the nation, named The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.
“The lodge will provide free lodging for patients with cancer as well as other services, which will save patients more than $3 million every year, according to a statement.”
Houston’s Hope Lodge will be American Cancer Society’s 33rd (and largest) Hope Lodge in the United States offering “64 patient suites, a shared kitchen, dining spaces, a help-yourself pantry, daily access to fresh linens, patient laundry facilities, a library and free transportation to and from treatment facilities.”
Emily Wilkinson states that Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation committed a $10 million grant to name the lodge. The foundation was founded by Best Buy founder, Dick Schulze. Bob and Janice McNair have committed $5 million to the Hope Lodge’s capital campaign and serve as co-chairs alongside former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush.
Thank you Emily Wilkinson bringing this news to our attention!
