Criteria for MD Anderson lodging by the Texas Medical Center

If you are a patient or family member traveling to Houston for MD Anderson cancer treatment, you will have several items on your list to prepare for your MD Anderson visit. One of the important items to check off your list is MD Anderson lodging. While hotels near MD Anderson may be your first instinct, they do not offer the same luxury, privacy and comfort as a private furnished home. There is no better way to go than having access to your own private home base, complete with all the comforts you can think of, for you and your family.

Factors to consider for MD Anderson lodging in Houston:

  1. Proximity to MD Anderson - Location, location, location. You want to be within 5-10 miles of MD Anderson hospital to avoid unnecessary commutes. Make it easier to get to and from MDA with a rental that is in close proximity to the Texas Medical Center, so you can spend your time on activities that add to your health and wealth being.

  2. Bedroom(s) are on first floor/level with no or minimal stairs - some homes have multiple levels with the bedrooms on the second level. MD Anderson patients may have difficulty with mobility during treatment. This makes it critical to find lodging with the main living areas and bedrooms on the first floor / first level, for ease of mobility.

  3. Bathrooms have the right type of shower or tub - many bathrooms have a shower/tub combination or just a tub. For MD Anderson patients, a tub may be relaxing. However, for those on a wheelchair or with difficulty climbing over the side of a tub, this is a very important criteria to consider.

  4. Doorways are wide enough for a wheelchair (if needed) - not every home is wheelchair accessible both for the main front door entry and interior doors. It is worthwhile checking with the property owner/manager to confirm this prior to booking.

  5. No shared area(s) - some rentals have shared bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms. As an MD Anderson patient, your health is number 1 priority and sharing spaces can lead to health issues.

  6. Fully-equipped kitchen - MD Anderson patients need a specific nutritional/diet regimen during treatment, and home cooking is extremely important. Make sure your rental has a fully-equipped kitchen with appliances, plates and silverware, pots, pans, etc.

  7. Natural light - Natural light has positive effects on physical and mental health, as well as general well-being. You want a home away from home that has lots of windows and natural light to give you positive energy and support your overall health

  8. Washer & dryer in unit - Not every rental has its own private washer and dryer in unit. Sharing machines can be complicated and frustrating, especially if you want to wash your personal items often. Otherwise, you may find yourself waiting to use a machine or spending extra money for dry cleaners.

  9. Pet friendly - Are you bringing your furry friend with you to Houston? Make sure to ask if your rental accommodations are pet friendly, and if so, what deposit and fees are applicable for your pet.

  10. TV and Wifi - For your time at home, you want to be able to rest and heal with quiet, yet also have access to TV and wifi to connect when needed. Confirm with your housing provider that TV service and high speed wifi are included in your MD Anderson lodging rental.
