Houston to create 71,000 jobs in 2019 through Greater Houston Partnership projects

Corporate Lodging in Texas

If you are in the market for a new job and have been looking for reasons to move to Houston, you are in luck. According to the Greater Houston Partnership’s annual Employment Forecast, 71,000 new jobs are due to hit the market this year.

Sectors like healthcare, construction, and finance top the list, each demonstrating exciting growth trends over the previous year. Other areas that are seeing growth include administrative support, manufacturing, technology, waste management, and the energy sector, now referred to as oil and gas.

Two areas of significance are construction and oil and gas. Each had lost ground in years past, with 2018 showing more than 4,000 jobs lost in construction and a steady downturn in the energy market causing jobs in that sector to flatline.

Construction ramps up

Today, construction is tapped to be the biggest winner. As the fastest-growing sector, it is projected to create 8,900 new jobs in 2019 as construction in the city starts to ramp up. Investment into initiatives like Texas Central’s high-speed rail line and mega-plants in Baytown and Channelview may be the catalyst for these gains.

As the city continues to recover from Hurricane Harvey, residential construction is also experiencing a boom as families strengthen and recover, rebuilding and reestablishing themselves in earnest.

Houston oil and gas jobs on the comeback trail

As for oil and gas, 1,900 new jobs are in the pipeline for 2019. Following the oil downturn in 2014, this sector has experienced significant losses that it is only now beginning to recover from. With one in four jobs having been lost during this time, it is considered to be one of the worst downturns of the past four decades. According to the researchers, Houston survived only because of strong ties to the global economy. With oil and gas now back in the black, the sector is looking forward to a great deal of growth and revitalization in the coming year.

Healthcare in Houston has a strong heartbeat

Houston has long been seen as a medical powerhouse. With the nation’s most innovative and progressive care and research facilities right here, this sector could support a city unto itself. All things considered, it is no wonder that, year upon year, healthcare is the fastest-growing industry in Houston. Houston’s population growth is part of the equation, as the city attracts tens of thousands of new residents every year. There are a reported 100,000 births annually, and the senior population is growing by 30,000 each year, amplifying the demand for quality and specialized medical care in the region.
