Houston furnished rental housing

Texas sees almost a half a million people moving to the state every single year and the reasons are about more than barbeque and great weather – although those are plenty good enough reasons for many!

Recently, the website apartmentlist.com conducted a study of just over 45K people across the country to find out what cities were the most desirable for renters. Of all the responses, Texas cities figured pretty high across the board, with Austin and San Antonio up in the A- realm, and Houston close behind with a solid B+.

Lots of jobs, great social scene

One of the biggest reasons cited for moving to Texas was for the abundant job market. While Austin took top honors in this category, Houston weighed in with a solid A-, as did Dallas.

Having a great social life also figured high in the overall standings and contributed greatly to the overall quality of life. San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin all got an A, while Houston and Fort Worth each nabbed an A-. Still and all, Houston’s admirable combination of great jobs and social scene makes it easy to understand why people continue to flock to the state. I mean, we love it here, but we’re biased. It’s nice to see that others “get it” as well.

Easy taxation for individuals and businesses

Another reason Texas is so popular is probably because of its tax situation. With no state income tax and a very low tax burden on businesses, several Texas cities made the list, with Houston earning an A, along with San Antonio and Fort Worth.

The only somewhat negative review Houston had to contend with had to do with commute times. In this category, we only managed a B-, while Austin sunk to a D – the latter probably having something to do with the traffic, which seems to be getting worse. Additionally, Texas doesn’t have much of a public transit system to ease these statistics and even the cities that do, Dallas and San Antonio, didn’t manage any better than a B.

However, Houston renters seem to be pretty fired up about most other aspects of their lives. Overall, Houston scored above average on just about everything, including affordability (A), and career opportunities (A-). The only thing that received a downright thumbs-down was something we can do nothing about—the weather—which plunged us down into C territory. Other considerations, however, like recreational activities and pet-friendliness, for which we received a B and a B+ respectively, brings the average back up nicely. People simply like living here and most will agree that there is a good balance between quality of life and the cost of living.

Pretty great for lots of reasons

From a national standpoint, Texas ranked with an A overall, and that’s out of all 50 states. We nailed an A+ for careers and a B+ for being affordable, which is a great consolation, considering the only negative things people could think of were commute times and lack of public transit.

What do you think makes Houston so great to live in? We’d love to hear!
