The Future of Medicine at Houston’s TMC and Houston Methodist Hospital

Texas Medical Center Housing Houston

It’s no secret that Houston has been at the forefront of life-saving technology where medicine is concerned. With Texas Medical Center (TMC) and Houston Methodist Hospital located in its midst, no doubt Houston has already seen its fair share of transformation in the medical industry.

But, experts say more changes are on the horizon. The future of medicine at Houston’s hospitals will more efficiently streamline patient care. The Space City will see new physicians and scientists coming to the area to oversee some of the exciting developments to come.

Here’s what the next 20 years will bring to Houston’s hospitals:

Artificial Intelligence and Automation

Emily Reiser of TMC’s Innovation Institute says Artificial Intelligence (AI) is coming to its prestigious medical center. Instead of the lengthy pre-visit check-ins patients sometimes experience today, patients will be able to automate their insurance verification and patient information. This will reduce the number of forms they’ll have to fill out since they won’t have to fill them out multiple times between providers.

So, if a patient has to see one specialist at the hospital who then refers them to another, they won’t have to repeat filling out forms with the same information. It’ll already be there once they complete the first check-in.

Reiser points out that doctors will be able to see more patients, while at the same time have more quality time to assess each patient.

Wearable Technology

Everybody’s wearing them – smartwatches that are integrated to their smartphones, fitness trackers to number their heartbeat and count their steps, and even diabetic socks that monitor temperature changes to warn of a potentially-dangerous diabetic foot problem.

Health-conscious patients are more concerned than ever about their heart health, fitness, and general health status. Patients benefit the most by tracking their health through wearable devices that calculate important data.

More doctors will begin to collect this data to monitor their patients’ conditions better. They’ll also be able to determine which patients are high-risk for certain health conditions.

Electronic Medical Records (EMRs)

Gone are the days of paper charts. Medical records are now accessible through electronic databases called EMRs. This allows doctors and hospitals to more easily share and access patient information.

The future of EMRs will be more streamlined. When this occurs, a patient’s entire health record will be able to be viewed automatically amongst doctors and providers across many locations.

This will allow physicians to more accurately pinpoint problems within a patient’s health as well as to collaborate better with other important team members for their health.

Houston’s Hospitals Will Bring More Doctors and Patients Together Than Ever

With more streamlined healthcare, Houston will likely bring more patients to its hospitals. More doctors will likely move to the Houston region to be part of the new era in medicine.

This might mean a demand for more relocation housing solutions as more doctors relocate to Houston. Doctors will no doubt want an upscale place to call home not too far away from the hospital campus.

And patients who are in Houston for an extended stay may want to conveniently and comfortably house their families during their treatment duration.
