2018: a big year for Texas Medical Center

In an address to the Greater Houston Partnership, Texas Medical Center’s CEO, Bill McKeon, talked about what they had accomplished in 2018 as well as their plans for the coming year.

Anticipating TMC3

One of the biggest projects in the pipeline is the TMC3 research center, a biomedical research hub created in collaboration with Texas Medical Center, the University of Texas Health Science Center, Baylor College of Medicine, MD Anderson, and Texas A&M.

The 1.5 million-square-foot campus of TMC3 is lauded to generate $5.2 billion in economic stimulus to Texas. It will create 30,000 new jobs, bringing leading researchers and medical experts together on a 30-acre campus that is to include 250,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratories and related facilities, 125,000 square feet of research space, office buildings, and 125,000 square feet of commercial space to include restaurants and retail. Additionally, TMC3 will also feature recreational greenspace, a 410-room hotel and a 50,000 square foot conference center.

In the center of the campus will be a multi-story facility shaped like a double-strand DNA helix. On its rooftop, 60 feet high above the ground will be a public park offering expansive views of the medical center and downtown Houston.

According to McKeon, the park is the real differentiator. As cities find more value in greenspace, it will allow Houston to compete with cities like Boston and San Francisco, adding density while enhancing the beauty and livability of its urban spaces.

Texas Medical Center is no stranger to international success

According to Bob Harvey, president of the Greater Houston Partnership, Texas Medical Center is known the world over, synonymous with medical research and innovation. McKeon underscored these sentiments in his speech, talking about exciting new collaborative research partnerships TMC has entered into with the United Kingdom and Australia. These partnerships will hopefully lead to more discoveries of life-saving therapies and treatments that can benefit the whole world.

Investing in medical startups, clinical research

One of TMC’s initiatives is aimed at developing medical startups, a fund that invests in early-stage companies, providing them with the funding they require to grow. As the funded companies reach their targets, proceeds will be channeled back into the program to help fund more young companies.

Another exciting aspect of what TMC does is found in the Clinical Research Institute, an organization that offers a common institutional review board that is shared by TMC members. By having an independent board at their disposal, research groups and startups can shorten their time to bring treatments to the clinical trial stage, a process that is often lengthy redundant when seeking to conduct trials at multiple locations.

Finally, McKeon talked about the TMCx accelerator program, which spawned 23 new medical device companies who have gone on to sign more than 100 agreements with TMC members in recent months.

All in all, the future looks very promising, both for TMC and for medical progress in general.
